  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

Claire online-- virtually as great as the real thing! :)

Claire, great to see you up and running. Good luck with your blog! Only promise me you won't stop commenting on my page. You're one of my favorite commenters. So I guess you'll soon be one of my favorite bloggers then!

I LOVE the name of your blog. It will take a while to get caught up on all your posts, but the photos and comments intrigue me.

I came over after googling "Macfayden stammer" because I just finished re-watching Pride and Prejudice after seeing it years ago, and was newly entranced by MM's sweet performance. I do beg to differ with you on Knightley, though. I thought she was great.
